Anti-larval biological treatment for controlling mosquito populations in the cross-border area Calarasi (Romania) - Silistra (Bulgaria)

Calarasi County Council started September 2007 the implementation of a project within the framework of PHARE for Cross-Border Cooperation Romania - Bulgaria 2005, budget line RO2005/017-535.01.02.01, in partnership with Silistra Municipality (Bulgaria) and Agency for Environmental Protection Calarasi, having E.I.D. Atlantique (Franta) as associate.

Duration of this project is 23 months, and its value is 283.085 Euro.

Major objective of this project is the improvement of environment management in order to increase the life standard, to capitalize on tourism potential and to protect the biodiversity in the cross-border area Calarasi - Silistra.

By this project it was created a specialized compartment to control the mosquito populations, within the County's Direction for Pest Control and Environmental Protection, it was held a specialized training session, supported by the French associate E.I.D. Atlantique (France), a study regarding the biological specifications for mosquito populations in Calarasi - Silistra area and Danube's basin and there were purchased a special software package - Geographic Information System - needed for drawing maps, equipments and hardware needed for the biological treatment, as well the active substance for anti-larval treatment.

Anti-larval treatment for controlling the mosquito populations will use biological substance, Bacillus thuringienis serotype H-14, that doesn't affect the biotope and ecological balance, will be focused : Calarasi, Oltenita, Borcea, Jegalia, Unirea, Dichiseni, Roseti, Modelu, Gradistea, Ciocanesti, Dorobantu, Manastirea, Chiselet, Spantov, Ulmeni, Chirnogi, Cascioarele and Mitreni; it will be done in two rounds during March - May 2009
