Closing Conference of PHARE CBC 2005 Romania-Bulgaria Project "Joint Environmental Management by Means of Controlling Mosquito Population in the Cross Border Region Calarasi - Silistra"

 

During September 2007 - July 2009, Calarasi County Council implemented a project within the framework of 2005 Romania-Bulgaria Cross Border Cooperation PHARE Program, with the budget line RO2005/017-535.01.02.01, in partnership with Mayoralty of Silistra (Bulgaria) and Agency for Environment Protection Calarasi, having as associate E.I.D. ATLANTIQUE (France).

The project developed within 23 months with a value of 283.085 EURO and aimed to improve environment management in view of increasing life quality, of valuing tourist potential and of protecting biodiversity in the cross border region Calarasi - Silistra.

The official closing of the project will take place on 15th of July 2009, at Calarasi County Council Headquarters, at 10.30.

In order to reach the purpose, several activities have been performed :

  • Setting up the compartment for control of mosquito populations
  • Acquiring a specialized software - geographical information system, necessary for mapping 
  •  Organizing two training sessions in the field of ecological techiques of fighting against mosquitoes
  • Performing the study of biological specificities of mosquitoes in the area Calarasi - Silistra of the Danube basin
  • Mapping the areas of development of mosquito populations
  • Acquiring the active bacillus thuringiensis serotype H-14 substance for treatment
  • Applying a specific mosquito-fighting treatment in identified areas
  • Organizing a common Romanian-Bulgarian workshop, in order to disseminate the actions results of the project
  • Advertising and promoting the project

Improving environmental conditions, as a result of controlling mosquito populations in the cross border region Calarasi - Silistra, the project stimulates the development of tourist potential, having as a result the economic growth of Calarasi - Silistra cross border area and improvement of the living standards.
